History Of Our Cause

soccer balls and surfing

“Soccer doesn’t revolve around the world, the world revolves around soccer”

While traveling through Central America seeking waves to quench our thirst for surf, we have come across people living in environments incomparable to even the poorest of conditions in the United States. Yet amongst these dire conditions, time after time we noticed a commonality that we could relate to. Vibes from the band Modest Mouse remind us “In the places you go, you’ll see the places you’re from.” Within these communities we saw soccer fields. Most are not lined; most do not even have grass. Some have proper goals, but more likely we see makeshift goals fashioned from tree branches or debris. Kids are seen sharing the field or their yard with cows, goats, and pigs. Regardless of this, no matter the setting or surroundings, it is the pure sight of a soccer field that instinctively excites the soul and stirs up the potential for play.

Having all played soccer our entire lives, we have naturally packed soccer balls into our board bags and backpacks, for the random pick-up games. With travel, you learn that if you have a soccer ball in your hand, no matter where you are in the world you will automatically have friends. To us soccer serves as a “universal language.” There is a connection with soccer and people that automatically bypasses cultural preconceptions, it is so simple but at the same time so powerful. Regardless of race, religion, or economic standing, the fact the game is enjoyed all over the world, has allowed us to recognize the appreciation and interconnectedness of all people. This suggests an essence of connection we share when we play the sport, as it brings us all true happiness.

During our surf trips, we’d often start pick-up games on the beach and in the towns that we drove through. So many times we have seen kids play with no shoes and a beat up ball, who have talent beyond belief. Joining in play with the locals became an instinctive part of our trips and something we found ourselves talking about over and over. It became a habit to leave the ball with the locals when the game was over, a simple gesture that has created more memorable smiles and laughter amongst the people we meet; and to be honest happiness within ourselves. Our purpose in establishing the PeacePassers has been the realization that people ultimately just want to feel happy; the game of soccer is a simple and natural way to achieve this. Unfortunately for persons in disadvantaged groups or areas the access to resources for sports and play is often limited. Engaging and participating in social contribution as PeacePassers we want to enhance opportunities for play in present and future generations.

We believe all people have potential. By maximizing human capabilities, daily experiences become sources of joy. Playing sports influences quality of life, thus promoting mutual respect, unity, and peacefulness with human relationships. The culture of soccer allows people to gain insight into positive connections with peers, family, & community. Passion for the game and people becomes parallel.

Soccer balls, shoes, socks and uniforms are needed. This can be done through direct contribution of supplies and/or through monetary donations for shipping fees. There is no greater feeling than passing joy and peace on to others. We challenge you to share that joy, to join us in spreading the peaceful vibe through donating soccer supplies to countries and areas less fortunate than our own. Thank you for considering our cause.
